Tembo Medical Centre, Kenya
Improving access to healthcare in Muhuru Bay
Tembo Medical Centre is a community healthcare facility in Muhuru Bay, Kenya, established in 2014 to improve access to essential healthcare for the local community. Muhuru Bay is a community of around 30,000 people on the shores of Lake Victoria, in an area facing significant economic and health challenges. Since opening, Tembo has provided primary healthcare alongside maternal health services, HIV testing and support, family planning, vaccinations and community health programmes. The centre is run by the local community, for the local community, and has become an established part of life in Muhuru Bay. It has also provided opportunities for local healthcare workers, community volunteers and suppliers.
Today, Tembo is entering an important new chapter. After more than a decade of operation, the centre needs further investment in its facilities, equipment, infrastructure and operations to ensure it can continue serving the community sustainably. Beyond Sunrise is supporting the next stage of Tembo’s development — helping to improve the facility while working towards a more locally sustainable model that can reduce its reliance on external fundraising over time.
Our Approach
We believe sustainable change starts with understanding the needs of the people and communities we support. Every community is different, and lasting solutions need to reflect the realities, priorities and opportunities that exist locally.
We focus on practical projects that address genuine needs and have the potential to create long-term benefits. Rather than focusing only on short-term assistance, we aim to support initiatives that can develop, grow and continue to make a difference over time.
We value local knowledge and believe communities should be involved in shaping the projects that affect them. Wherever possible, we use local people, businesses, suppliers and skills, helping projects create benefits within the communities they serve.
As Beyond Sunrise grows, we will continue to look for opportunities to support projects across health, education, opportunity and community development.
